Once described as the ‘luckiest man’ in Africa, Swaziland’s King Mswati III picked an 18 year-old beauty contestant as his 14th wife, revealed a palace spokesman.
“I can confirm that the king has introduced to the nation a new liphovela (royal fiancee),” said Timothy Mtetwa, the palace governor.

The King is said to have ‘noticed’ the 18-year-old former high school student who graduated last year in the Reed Dance ceremony held last month. The Reed Dance is an annual traditional Swazi dance ceremony where young Swazi women parade past the king, bare-chested, to allow the King to pick a new wife. The ceremony has become a tourist sensation in the small landlocked southern African country as sometimes tourists join the dance ‘just for the fun of it’. In may, a 15-year old student at a local private school near the residence palace of the king’s fourth wife fled to Britain after the king begun making advances at her to join the harem of his then 13 wives.
“No one ever says no to the King, so I just fled when he begun contacting my school,” the girl had indicated then. It took the intervention of the aunt who smuggled her out to Britain to continue with her education.

The new bride, Sindiswa Dlamini, whom the King picked last month, was introduced to the royal household adorned in red feathers after it was found expectant. It is a tradition that the King’s virgin pick must become pregnant before joining the country’s royalty.
